ALLERGIC RHINITIS

Condition and Symptoms

This very common condition affects 10-15% of children and 26% of adults in the UK. It can affect quality of life, work performance and attendance. Allergic rhinitis has trebled in the last 20 years.

Symptoms may include: sneezing, itching of the nose, throat and palate, runny nose (usually clear), red itchy watery eyes, post nasal drip (the sensation of mucus dripping down the back of the throat), cough, wheeze and nose bleeds (due to excessive rubbing of the itchy nose).

Treatment

Mrs Bentley will be able to make the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis at the initial consultation, after taking a detailed history and examination. Tests, including blood tests, are often requested and a clear treatment plan will be commenced.
